Description:

Egypt, Roman Period, 150-200 CE. Finely modeled Egyptian terracotta head with caricature features, the face showing wide open eyes under arched eyebrows, a prominent nose, fleshy lips and protruding ears. The head is a depiction of an ugly slave and fits into the grotesque tradition of Hellenistic art; the present head however is a Roman imperial development. For the depiction of an ugly slave with an almost identical head cf. lot no. 393 in: J. Fischer. Griechisch-Römische Terrakotten aus Ägypten. Tübingen 1994. 2"H, without stand. Provenance: ex-Swiss art market. Schuler Auktionen, Zurich (Switzerland), March 2008 sale. All items in this auction have been legally acquired, are legal to sell, and guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids, papered by our parent company. The starting price is the lowest price at which the lot can sell.

  • Condition: Broken at the neck level, rear missing. Tip of the nose and left side of the chin slightly worn. Superb modeling.
