Description:

Egypt, Roman Period, 150-200 CE. Top of a lantern in the shape of a helmeted Athena head with a large suspension loop on top. The slightly bent head with wide upward looking eyes and fleshy lips. The parted hairdo with wavy curls emerging below the triangular helmet. Corkscrew locks running to both sides of her neck. The combination of Athena with lamps goes back to the equation of Athena with the Egyptian goddess Neith and her festival of lights at Sais.
