Description:

Egypt, Ptolemaic period, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. A hand-carved stone sarcophagus of a petite form with a tapered top portion representative of an obelisk with a flat base, tall sides, and a hollow verso meant to hold an offering like a mummified shrew or another petite sacrificial animal. The front of the sarcophagus depicts a simplified effigy of Osiris in low relief, standing in mummiform atop fused legs, and wearing an Atef crown flanked with ostrich feathers atop his head. Size: 1.7" W x 4.875" H (4.3 cm x 12.4 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in 2014; ex-private Los Angeles, California, USA collection; ex-private estate collection, Beverly Hills, California, USA, imported into the United States over 50 years ago
