Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A squat, mold-formed pottery jar of a cylindrical shape that was perhaps used as an offering vessel to be filled with cosmetic material. The flat-bottomed jar has a thick rim surrounding the interior and gently corseted walls exhibiting several low relief images. One seated figure carries an overseer's whip in one hand while holding the other hand to his mouth, and the other figure wears a stippled vestment beneath concentric necklaces. Other images include a rectangular column, a pedestal surmounted by a slender alabastron, bushels of wheat within a basket, and a flower within the curved horns of a sun disk. The inclusion of the alabastron suggests this vessel was used to offer perfumes or scented oils to a deceased individual. Size: 1.5" W x 1.75" H (3.8 cm x 4.4 cm)
