Description:

Egyptian, probably late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Periods, ca. 1290 to 30 BCE. This is a small pottery amulet, in excellent condition, showing the god Bes. He has a beard which is often interpreted as a lion's mane; his plumed headdress is also diagnostic of the character. Bes watched over the household, particularly the women and children of the house, protecting them with the magical sign sa. An amulet like this one was made to be worn for protection. Size: 2.6" H (6.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex-DiPietro Collection, New Hampshire
