Description:

**Originally Listed At $1500**

Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom, 12th Dynasty, ca. 1991 to 1802 BCE. A hand-carved wooden left foot of veristic form that is covered in gesso and painted with yellow and black pigments, perhaps left from an Egyptian statuette. The foot is adorned with a sandal strap that courses over the top and terminates between the big toe and second toe, and a dowel on the verso indicates where it was once connected to a larger statue. This foot was perhaps part of an anthropoid coffin, made from wood because it was more pliable to carve and could be made to look more naturalistic. Size: 5.1" L x 2.3" W x 2.2" H (13 cm x 5.8 cm x 5.6 cm)

Cf. a similar example from a Romano-Egyptian anthropoid coffin at The Brooklyn Museum, accession number 37.2041.1E

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA; ex-Royal-Athena Gallery, New York, New York, USA; ex-collection of Edouard Louis Joseph, Baron Empain (1852-1929), France
