Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic period, ca. 712 to 332 BCE. A detailed cartonnage fragment designed to look like a pectoral. At the top is a magnificent vulture, wings spread, brightly colored, with huge striped wings and head turned towards one side. The bird grasps something round in one clawed foot. The vulture god in Egyptian mythology is Nekhbet, one of the oldest of the gods, and the patron of Upper Egypt when the kingdom was unified. The vulture may also have come to represent the goddess Isis in later artwork. Comes in a glass case. Size: 13.5" W x 7" H (34.3 cm x 17.8 cm); size of case: 14.7" W x 8.1" H (37.3 cm x 20.6 cm)
