Description:

Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, ca. 1479 to 1401 BCE. A striking turquoise green scarab of naturalistic form with a notched wing case, pierced from head to back end of thorax for suspension. The underside is inscribed with the distinctive cartouche of King Thothmes III (Men-Kheper-Ra, also often known as Thutmosis). Other hieroglyphs on the underside are depictions of the gods, Sobek-Neter-Neb- Ra. Taken together, this means "Glory to Thothmes III god of the two lands, beloved of Sobek and Ra." Thutmose III (also Tutmosis) is known as the "Napoleon of Egypt", famous for his victories on the field of battle whilst his stepmother Hatshepsut ruled; she is often known as the "first great woman in history of whom we are informed".
