Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 672 to 332 BCE. A remarkable faience amulet depicting 2 ba-birds - human-headed falcons intended to represent human souls - perched beside one another, crowned by sun discs, and enveloped in brilliant blue glaze. Ancient Egyptians believed that the dead would continue to exist after death in a number of different forms. The ba, a mobile, energetic life force that was believed to travel to and from the world of the living, was portrayed either as a human-headed bird or a winged human wearing a solar disk on his or her head. Size: 0.4" L x 0.5" W x 1" H (1 cm x 1.3 cm x 2.5 cm); 2.7" H (6.9 cm) on included custom stand.
