Description:

Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 5th to 7th century CE. A handwoven and embroidered cotton or linen textile fragment with a rondel with red and stylized flowering tree or shrub with that represents the Tree of Life, a popular symbol from Christianity. This medallion is sewn on a plain-weave and undyed cloth that has cut edges - possibly once part of a garment or burial shroud. The cloth is mounted in a modern frame under glass and ready to display. Size: 14.2" L x 12.25" W (36.1 cm x 31.1 cm); textile: 4.75" L x 4.75" W (12.1 cm x 12.1 cm)

  • Condition: Professionally framed in modern wood and glass frame, textile not examined outside of frame. Fraying and losses to the upper layer (dyed fibers) as shown. The plain weave cloth underneath has cut edges. Age expected staining, but colors are well preserved and motif is discernable.
