"Egypt, 7th - 8th century CE. Egyptian Coptic clavus fragment which stylized animals between black bands. The imagery is still Greek rather than Christian, showing an eagle/rooster (?), a winged griffin and a lion/panther looking backwards. The lower border with a floral chain. L. 17.7 cm (7 in), H. 6 cm (2.3 in) Frame: 33 cm (13 in) x 27 cm (10.6 in)

Provenance: Swiss Private Collection, since the 1960s.
