Egypt, possibly from Bubastis during the 26th Dynasty, 664-525 BCE. Ancient bronze standing figure of goddess Bastet standing, with the body of a lady and the head of a cat. She wears an elaborate tight- fitting dress, holding a sistrum in her right hand, and a small basket hangs from her left arm. Her left hand holds an aegis, possibly with the head of a lion surmounted by the sun disc. Size: 3-1/4"H + black stand. Bastet was the daughter of Re, the sun god. She was also identified with the goddess Sekhmet, and they were called the Goddesses of the West (Sekhmet) and the East (Bastet). Provenance: Ex-Dutch collection, acquired during the early 1980s.
