Description:

Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. This openwork faience amulet depicts the wadjet, or "Eye of Horus," an ancient symbol of protection. A suspension hole is pierced into the edges of the rectangular frame. Symbolic of health and healing, the wadjet is one of the oldest Egyptian symbols. In ancient Egyptian mythology, the falcon god Horus governed the skies, the sun, and the moon. The sun, represented as Horus' right eye, rose each day, providing life-giving energy to crops and gods alike. When the sun set, the moon, represented as his left eye, guided the recently deceased to the afterlife. Enveloped in a green-blue glaze symbolizing the healing powers of the Nile, wadjet amulets were worn or tucked into mummy wrappings. Size: 0.9" L x 0.88" W (2.3 cm x 2.2 cm)
