Edward Powis Jones (American, 1919-1998), "Crucifixion" gouache on paper, 1964. Signed by the artist on the lower right. An expressionistic depiction of the Crucifixion delineated in a vibrant palette by the American artist Edward Powis Jones who created etchings of the Stations of the Cross and paintings of the Crucifixion upon converting to Catholicism. His focus on this subject matter also reflects the immense sense of loss he endured when his parents passed away at an early age. Jones' journey as an artist began as an American expatriate in Paris in the shadow of WWII, and by the time he passed away in New York, not only had he been an accomplished painter, but he had also created remarkable works in printmaking, sculpture, and photography. Edward Powis Jones was born in New York City and studied at Harvard University. His solo exhibitions include, Bard College (1948), Kraushaar Galleries, (1949 and 1953), New Gallery, New York City (1955, 1957, and 1958), Pomfret School (1957), Interfaith Center, New York City (1962), Norfolk Museum Arts and Sciences (1966), 1st National City Bank, Paris (1972), World Trade Center (1975), Vassar College Art Gallery, Poughkeepsie, New York (1978), Ringwood Manor, New Jersey (1980), Institute Art and Urban Resources, Long Island City (1980), Books & Company, New York City (1983), Mead Art Gallery, Amherst College (1983), Marcuse Pfeifer Gallery (1985), J.B. Speed Art Museum, Louisville (1990). Jones' work is also represented in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum Art, New York City; Museum Modern Art (MOMA), New York City; Library Congress, Washington D.C., Brandeis University, Philadelphia Museum Art, Brooklyn Museum, Toledo Museum, and the Whitney Museum American Art, New York City.
