Description:

South America, Ecuador or Peru, Amazon Basin, Canelos-Quichua people, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A beautiful hand-built drinking bowl known as a mucawa with polychrome decorations and zoomorphic motifs. The exterior is slipped in orange, and the interior in a creamy white- then overpainted with incredibly precise fine lines in maroon, black, white, and orange hues. The interior creatures include scorpions, butterflies, lizards, fish, and armadillos. Mucawas were used for served aswa, a beverage made from fermented manioc root (cassava / yuca). The motifs traditionally incorporate symbols and motifs from mythology and the rich natural world of the rainforest. Size: 7" Diameter x 3.25" H (17.8 cm x 8.3 cm)
