Description:

Roman, ca. 300 CE. This is a military tombstone bearing a Greek inscription that translates to "Julius the Virtuous, Be Well". There is another inscription down one side, but it is too worn to read. Roman funerary inscriptions demonstrate the human side of the past, as they often contain words of endearment; they also are very informative to archaeologists today because they are often informative about names, ages, birth dates and death dates of the people they memorialize. An eagle holding a wreath, symbol of the Roman military, adorns the stele. This stele could have been found anywhere in the Roman Empire, as Roman soldiers often travelled, fought, and, in many cases, died far from home. Size: 18" L x 6" W x 26" H. Provenance: Ex- Sarkisian Estae, Denver, Colorado acquired before 1960. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #109981
