Description:

Roman, Eastern Empire, late Imperial to early Byzantine period, ca. late 3rd to 5th century CE. A lovely mold-formed vessel composed of translucent glass of a pale-yellow, near-colorless hue with a slightly concave base, a wide, apple-shaped body with a rounded shoulder, a squat neck, and a flaring rim with a collared lip. The body's exterior is decorated with several applied trails of similarly-colored glass in X-shaped forms, and thick swaths of silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence coat most of the interior and exterior surfaces. A beautiful and elegant example of late Roman artistry! Size: 4.125" W x 4.5" H (10.5 cm x 11.4 cm).

For a stylistically-similar example with an out-folded rim, please see "Shining Vessels: Ancient Glass from Greek, Roman and Islamic Times." Fortuna Fine Arts, Ltd., New York, 1991, p. 80, fig. 146.
