Eastern Greece, Classical period, ca. 5th century BCE. A wheel-thrown blackware pottery vessel of a sizable form with a flared foot, an apple-shaped body with a gently tapered rim, and a pair of ring handles projecting from the upper body. The exterior of the vessel features a pair of parallel lines incised along the shoulder along with several faint striations across the midsection and lower body. Large pottery vessels like this example were perhaps used at banquets for those with an insatiable thirst or perhaps as voluminous vessels for offerings at a temple or tomb. - Condition: Minor abrasions to rim, handles, and foot, with one stable hairline fissure stemming from rim, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout and faint silvery iridescence in some areas.
