Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful and intricate thangka, a silk and canvas textile for Buddhist devotion and meditation. The scene is very detailed with dozens of seated disciple figures and deities with a blue sky and a green landscape. The main figure is the famous Tibetan monk and philosopher Tsongkhapa (1357-1419 CE), also known as Losang Drakpa or Je Rinpoche. He gained a large following during his life and founded the Gelug school of Buddhism that continued after his death; the 19th and 20th century had many famous and influential Gelug figures. The verso has the remains of an old wax seal with an indiscernable Tibetan inscription. Thangka serve as teaching tools, but also as focal points for devotion when brought out during a ritual. They also can be used for meditation, allowing the viewer to focus on the scene at hand and put away earthly distractions. Size: 42" L x 30" W (106.7 cm x 76.2 cm)
