Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of lively, polychrom wooden figures, one male and one female, depicted in dance, mounted on display stands. These hand-carved, colorful figures represent "Nats," or nature spirits, and are dressed in traditional Thai costume, with the male figure adorned in a tiger-head cap. Prior to the introduction of Buddhism, Thai culture was rooted in animism, with Nats revered as important nature spirits. As Buddhism spread, these figures were integrated into Buddhist temples, where Nat statues are still commonly seen today. The original iron eyelets, which were once used for hanging these, are visible on the verso. Size of man: 14" L x 4" W x 17" H (35.6 cm x 10.2 cm x 43.2 cm); 22.5" H (57.2 cm) on included custom stand.
