Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand or Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A bronze left hand from a statue of the Buddha, the the slender fingers held upward, each deocrated with a rossette shaped chakra ring. Buddhist hand symbols are often presented in specific styles to represent different aspects of Buddha and Buddhist values, and the open and upheld hand is the abhaymudra gesture, symbolizing a calm and reassuring presence and dispelling fear. Remains of the luxurious sleeve hem cover the wrist- the shallow depressions of the robe may have once contained glass inlays. The hollow forearm casting enables the piece to rest on a tenon upon the stand as a fabulous display piece!
