Description:

Ancient El Salvador, ca. 100 BCE - 400 CE. The form of this vessel employs a tall spout rising from the bottom rear of a bulbous vessel in the form of a Coati or Coatimundi, an animal known to inhabit El Salvador and surrounding regions. In whimsical fashion, the animal is shown with hands resting on his snout, while the tail forms the vessel spout. The form of this vessel is associated with the serving of frothy Cacao- a symbol of status and of ritual importance amongst the ancient Maya. It is believed that the Cacao beverage being poured from the thin spout at some height over a serving cup or vase aided in the production of froth in the pouring process. Ample orange pigment, as well as some striated red designs, remains. Interestingly, it appears that the likely site provenance of this vessel was penned by an old collector on the lower half of one side near the base, which says "Nyapa Suchinango". This is an alternate spelling for Nejapa, Suchinango, which is located in El Salvador. It is very rare to have probable site provenance info such as this for a piece. Measures approximately 5" tall x about 5-1/2" at the widest point. Provenance: Former North Carolina, USA collection. All items in this auction are legal to buy/sell under U.S. statute covering cultural patrimony per United States Code 2600, CHAPTER 14 -- CONVENTION ON CULTURAL PROPERTY, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

  • Condition: Intact overall, with only relatively minor, expert restoration to a few ancient chips at the edge of the rim. Otherwise, minor wear to the end of the spout, and expected weathering, wear, chips and abrasions overall. It is undetermined whether or not the penned provenance/site info can be easily removed, but remains as an important part of the history of this piece.
