Oceania, South Pacific, Polynesia, Samoa / American Samoa, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A striking ensemble of 6 hand-carved wooden war clubs and spears from Samoa and American Samoa. The 2 spears feature lengthy, slender forms sculpted with projecting, ridged designs, while the 4 clubs display hefty heads adorned with inlaid white pigment in numerous decorative motifs. The largest spear is incised with "W. Crosby / Samoa / April.1.1899" and the shortest paddle is inscribed "American Samoa" on one side. Size of largest (signed spear): 60.1" L x 1.5" W (152.7 cm x 3.8 cm)
