Description:

Iran, ca. 1st millennium BCE. This is a beautiful bulbous greyware pottery vessel wih a long elegant bird form beak spout and a small applied loop handle from the rim to the shoulder. The shoulder has incised linear bands to form a rope-like decoration. This find looks similar to those made at Tepe Sialk, a large ancient archaeological site in central Iran with a ziggurat dating to 3000 BCE. The bird decorations are thought to be related to the makers' conception of the afterlife as they are commonly found on libation vessels associated with graves. The simplicity and elegance of this piece make it one of my favorites. Size: 11" W x 8" H (27.9 cm x 20.3 cm).
