Description:

Nepal or Bhutan, ca. 19th century CE. Wonderfully expressive mask representing a monkey/ Hanuman - the celestial monkey-god. Carved from a single piece of hardwood, then stained/ painted a darker brown with elongated face, rounded eyes and slit mouth. Masks such as these were worn by shamans during rituals in order to protect the village, heal disease and practice exorcism. Size: 9" H (22.9 cm) not including custom stand.

Provenance: private Colorado collection acquired in Bangkok,Thailand
