Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Tlingit, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fantastic ceremonial wand rattle, the rod is made from bent cane or thick bark, wrapped around the shaft; the ends capped with cotton cloth and cotton cords tied through the pierced tip of each hoof. The rattle is mounted in a modern case as a ready to display piece. The dried hoof claws from deer were used as rattles - sometimes attached to wrists or ankles of dancers, clothing, and as rattles in both dance and shamanistic rituals.
