Native American, Western United States, Upper Midwest / Northern Plains Tribes, Dakota (Sioux), ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A red catlinite (pipestone) tomahawk pipe engraved with floral and geometric motifs on the blade portion. The pipe is carved from two separate pieces and attached together with an interior metal stem. Pipes of this style became popular as display items and collectable pieces after they were exhibited by Native Americans at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World's Fair. Traces of soot residue in the pipe bowl indicate that it was smoked at some time. Size: 16.25" L x 6" W (41.3 cm x 15.2 cm)
Provenance: private Alamo, California, USA collection, before 2000; acquired from private Montana collection.

- Condition: Remains of soot inside the receptacle head. Stable hairline fissures on the long stem and head. Some minor chips and surface nicks, but overall great condition.
