Description:

Native American, Western United States, Plains tribes, likely Lakota / Dakota (Sioux), ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An interesting leather strap strung with dozens of deer hoof claws and glass trade beads. Deer toes are natural rattles, the hollow hooves make a pleasant jangling sound, and are often used for dancing costumes, hand rattles, and other adornments. This leather strap was worn by a dancer like a bandolier or sash, draped over the shoulder and spanning across the chest, resting at the dancer's hip. Size of strap doubled: 70" L (177.8 cm); hooves: 1.5" L x 0.75" W (3.8 cm x 1.9 cm)

  • Condition: Good condition. Chips and losses to come claws and beads. Leather has some cracking and fraying, and some stiffening, but still somewhat supple. Makes a nice rattling noise.
