Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase I to II, ca. 100 to 400 CE. A beautiful hand-built pottery vessel with a round but stable base, a spherical body, a stirrup-shaped handle, and a squat cylindrical neck with a rounded rim. The cream-slipped exterior is accentuated by a pair of highly-stylized, red-painted, anatomically-accurate crawfish (also crawdads or crayfish), each with sinuous legs, protruding eyes, delineated chelipeds (claws), a segmented carapace and abdomen, and a frilled tail fin. Size: 4.75" W x 6.625" H (12.1 cm x 16.8 cm).

For an illustration of a stylistically-similar crawfish depiction, please see: Donnan, Christopher B. and Donna McClelland. "Moche Fineline Painting: Its Evolution and Its Artists." UCLA Fowler Museum of cultural History, Los Angeles, 1999, p. 37, fig. a.
