Latin America, Mexico / Guatemala, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A wooden mask with an articulated jaw and slits above the eyes for seeing through. The pink skin, blue eyes, and beard are a caricature of a European conquistador, and this mask may have been used in the Dance of the Conquest. Both Mexico and Guatemala have a long tradition of wooden folk-art masks, used in dances and ceremonies held throughout the year. Size: 12" L x 8.75" W (30.5 cm x 22.2 cm)
