Description:

Latin America, Mexico, dated the 1st of May 1863 CE. An antique Mexican ex voto depicting a young man who has removed his sombrero on bended knee with his hands clasped over his heart in prayer before a vision of the Jesus Christ on the cross within a mandorla of clouds beside a haloed Saint Rufino Camarillo dressed in blue and white robes and holding a holy book in his right hand and a processional cross in his left. Unfortunately, the text has faded a bit and is somewhat difficult to read. The date, however, is quite clear, as the text begins, "On the 1st of May on 1863 . . . " One can also make out the names of "Sr. Puebla" and "Santo Rufino Camarillo" (sp) in the text. The artist clearly had knowledge of both linear and atmospheric perspective. Of course the folk art influences trump the academic ones, making for a charming stylistic aesthetic. A special example indeed! Size: 14" L x 10" W (35.6 cm x 25.4 cm)

Ex-votos, are devotional paintings that bear a semblance to retablos, only they also include a written narrative offering thanks to a saint for coming to a family’s aid. The term is short for the Latin phrase ex voto suscepto meaning “from the vow made.” Oftentimes, gratitude is expressed for curing an ill child, expediting the recovery of an elderly family member, the safe return of a soldier, or the rescue of a victim from some horrific accident or crime. The petitioner dedicates a small painting with a brief written testimonial to a beloved patron saint for granting a miracle. These hand-written stories together with their expressive visual scenes can be quite touching and dramatic.
