Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Northern Washington state to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Makah and /or Nootka, ca. 19th to early-20th century CE. A pouch woven from vegetal fibers and a pair of harpoon hunting heads made of wood and iron. The pouch has a double flap closure, perhaps for attaching to a belt, and dyed fibers are incorporated into the weaving, but faded with age. The harpoon heads have a large split point made from wood and an iron blade attached by tightly wrapped cords made of cotton and hide, the long line on one is made of vegetal fiber and the other is cotton. These were used for hunting sea mammals such as seals. Size of pouch: 7" L x 6" W (17.8 cm x 15.2 cm)

  • Condition: Fading and discoloration to the woven pouch fibers. Fraying to fibers and clearly used but intact and tightly woven. Harpoons have mineral deposits and oxidation from age and use. Chips to wood barbs, and fraying to cords on both.
