Description:

Africa, Burkino Faso or Mali, Lobi, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand carved wooden female figure, standing in a frontal position with her hands placed on her thighs, presenting a characteristically oversized head, expressive stylized facial features, an entirely nude body with perky breasts, a protruding perhaps pregnant belly, and voluptuous thighs. Such carved figures were placed upon family altars in the thilda, a small room in the dwelling, and embodied ancestral spirits or tibil thil. The greater the collection of figures on the family altar, the higher the family's social status. Wood block base. Size: 19.375" H (49.2 cm); 20.125" H (51.1 cm) on included custom stand.
