Description:

Africa, Niger River valley, Bura culture, ca. 3rd to 13th century CE, but most likely toward the later end of the culture. A large and unusual pottery head depicting an expressive human visage in redware coarse clay. The face presents a worshipful countenance, with wide open round inset eyes as if in a trancelike state, large and somewhat exaggerated ears as if to communicate that this person is listening to sacred chants, and an open mouth. Beyond this, his cheeks are adorned with scarification marks, and he dons a double coiled headband. Custom stand. Size: 7.75" W x 7.5" H (19.7 cm x 19 cm); 13" H (33 cm) on stand
