Near East/Central Asia, Turkey / Iran Ottoman Empire, Kurdish culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A forged-steel weapon known as a jambiya or khanjar, a type of dagger that is used throughout the Middle East with a high quality silver sheath and appliques. The blade is Damascus wootz steel and features a curved profile and a double-edged design, the tang set in a cow horn handle studded with 96% silver rondels and granulation. The sheath is cast from 86% silver, with lovely braided and repousse motifs that are characteristic of Kurd style. Size in sheath: 18" L x 2.3" W (45.7 cm x 5.8 cm); blade: 8.5" L x 1.5" W (21.6 cm x 3.8 cm); silver quality: 86% to 96%
