Western Europe, probably Italy, ca. 20th century CE. A lovely pair of stone cameos featuring female deities: an agate cameo of Athena set into a silver pendant and a lava stone cameo of Persephone in a silver brooch. Athena - Roman Minerva - was the Greek goddess of wisdom, warfare, and handicraft, hence her prominent helmet. Alternatively, Persephone, also called Cora or Proserpina in Rome, was the queen of the underworld and the goddess of Spring, which is demonstrated by her floral crown. Size of larger (Athena): 1" W x 1.5" H (2.5 cm x 3.8 cm); of larger cameo (both about the same): 0.8" W x 1.1" H (2 cm x 2.8 cm); silver quality: brooch: 89.5%, pendant: 93.5%; total weight: 19.1 grams
