Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Lombok / Bali, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful antique wooden carving of a deer with real antlers. Such statues and antlers were used for shrines, or as funerary protectors, due to their significance in Hindu beliefs, and to symbolize the glorified Majapahit Empire who played a significant role in spreading Hinduism to Bali and surrounding islands. The petite antlers might be from a small, native deer species such as a munjac or the Javan rusa deer. Size: 24" L x 5" W x 30" H (61 cm x 12.7 cm x 76.2 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
