Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Peru, Inca hinterlands (Chucu), ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A lovely plaque carved from chalky-white limestone with well-defined corners and smooth faces. The obverse features an applied decorative program of mica-based pigment formed into red stripes enclosed within a pair of light-blue stripes atop a cream-hued ground. Plaques like this were placed as offerings to Pacha Mama and Pacha Papa (Mother and Father Earth) to ensure health among the livestock and among human inhabitants of the clan. Size: 6.25" W x 6.8" H (15.9 cm x 17.3 cm).
