Native American, Great Plains, North Dakota, Mandan, ca. early 20th century CE. A fascinating - and still functioning! - dance rattle comprised of a wooden handle wrapped in leather and a discoid head formed from sewn animal hide. The head is filled with petite beans, kernels, or pebbles to create lively reverberations when shaken and bird feather hangs just below. Faint remains of red and black pigment horizontally stripe the hide of the handle. Size: 15.5" L x 5.2" W (39.4 cm x 13.2 cm)

Provenance: private Alamo, California, USA collection, acquired at auction in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA in the 1960s
