Description:

Early Christian / Byzantine, ca. 5th to 6th century CE. A beautiful pair of gold amulets, each one comprised of cylindrical/tubular forms made from 20K+ gold (87% gold) sheet and elaborately decorated with two sinuous bands of filigree running across the front face, a trio of granule clusters below, and granule adorned loops above. Whatever these amulets were intended to hold must have been very special! Rare and stunning! Size: larger measures 1.125" W x .625" H (2.9 cm x 1.6 cm), but both are nearly the same size; gold quality: 87%, equivalent to 20K+.

Provenance: private Dunn collection, Coral Springs, Florida, USA, acquired in the 1990s

  • Condition: One of the amulets is missing its central loop, but the others remain. Some expected indentations to granules and bodies commensurate with age. The white substance contained within the tubular bodies was probably placed there at one point to preserve the forms of these amulets. Gold has developed a warm age patina.
