Description:

Ancient Greece, Athens, Early Attic, ca. 6th century BCE. A wonderful pottery amphora adorned with black-figure decoration of Dionysus and 2 maenads on one side and a pair of warriors in battle on the other. The neck is embellished by a chain of palmettes and lotus buds followed by tongued decoration on the shoulder, while a band of rays emanates upward from the discoid foot. Fugitive white pigment has been added to delineate the skin of the maenads, who are enveloped in meandering grape vines extending from a vessel held by Dionysus. On the opposite side, the helmeted soldiers enact a dramatic battle scene, each wielding a shield as one bends down on one knee. Size: 4" Diameter x 6.9" H (10.2 cm x 17.5 cm)
