Description:

Near East, Western Anatolia, Turkey, Kula, ca. late 19th to early 20th CE. A beautiful woven wool prayer rug with a low pile and short warp fringe. The wool fibers have a lustrous sheen that gives the appearance of silk. The central motif is a mihrab - the arched doorway or an ornamental niche in the wall of a mosque that indicates the direction of Mecca. A stylized plant or tree of life with ochre yellow leaves is woven in the center and surrounded by repeating "cemetery" patterns of buildings and trees, and registers of repeated floral motifs frame the mihrab. So called "cemetery" rugs may have been used during funerals, the cypress tree used in the pattern are a symbol of immortality. Size: 63" L x 47.5" W (160 cm x 120.6 cm)
