Description:

Tribal / Ethnographic, West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, early 20th century CE. A hand-carved, dramatic wood colonial figure of a man wearing a pith helmet and bandoliers riding a horse. Extensive details abound, from what the man holds to the horse. Much of the focus of the carving is on the upper body of the human figure, while his lower body and the body of the horse appear relatively small. In Yoruba art, equestrian figures are often carved to show martial conquest, and carvings like this one except featuring native Yoruban subjects adorn the architectural supports of some Yoruba palaces. Comes with custom stand. Size: 10" W x 24" H (25.4 cm x 61 cm); height on stand: 24.5" (62.2 cm)
