Description:

West Africa, Mali or Niger, Tuareg peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fascinating backrest, known as an "ehel", featuring a long point and a rectangular upper portion with an X form at its base and two raised bars at its top, all hand carved from a single piece of wood. The face is incised with diagonal and horizontal linear motifs. The nomadic Tuareg traverse the southern Sahara, carrying their richly decorated homes and all their belongings with them on their journeys. Size: 7.7" W x 29" H (19.6 cm x 73.7 cm); 31" H (78.7 cm) on included custom stand.
