Description:

Oceania, Trobriand Islands, Massim peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A wonderful and early example of a dance club with a thick handle, a semicircular pommel bulb, projecting shoulder prongs, and a tapering body. The front of the body has a carved square decoration with three vertical curvilinear panels surmounted by a set of concentric zigzagging lines, all brought forth with applied white pigment. Dozens of horizontal striations are present along the back of the lower body. Lovely espresso-hued patina covers the entirety of the ceremonial carving. Size: 3.625" W x 27" H (9.2 cm x 68.6 cm); 28.8" H (73.2 cm) on included custom stand.
