Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sulawesi Island, Toraja people, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A beautiful vest known as a sa'dan (literally "war suit") with braided rattan fibers forming the frontal vest panels, shoulder straps, and backing. The exterior surfaces of the vest are covered in dozens of rectangular mail panels carved from ox bone and have six square buttons along the front peripheries secured with a string bearing bovine teeth pendants. Four large roundels display individual serrated discs that are meant to act as magical amulets for warding against enemy attacks and evil magic sent forth by spellcasters.
