Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved and hollow wooden marionette puppet head of a sizable form depicting an amicable male countenance that is accentuated with white and black pigment as well as pink pigment on the lips. The puppet head rests upon a wavy neck base and features a face composed of almond-shaped eyes beneath thin brows, a broad nose with delineated nostrils, full lips with a grooved philtrum, tall ears, all beneath a five-tiered headdress. Puppet heads like this are used throughout Thailand and typically had larger costumes attached beneath. Size: 7.9" W x 14.7" H (20.1 cm x 37.3 cm); 20.3" H (51.6 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Chips and abrasions to neck, face, headdress, peripheries, and verso, with chipping and fading to original pigmentation, several stable hairline fissures throughout and one large but stable fissure to one side, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits, nice traces of original pigment, and great patina throughout.
