Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, early 20th century CE. A bronze statue cast in the form of a kneeling female figure, Thorani, with a deliberately ancient style of clothing and facial depiction. She sits beneath a vine growing from her head, one hand holding it and the other raised to her head to wash her hair; she wears a crown and is atop a plinth (all part of one cast piece) with a floral design around its base. Size: 5.5" W x 11.1" H (14 cm x 28.2 cm)

As the Buddha was nearing enlightenment, the demon Mara sent his armies as distractions. The goddess Thorani emerged from the earth, and, by washing her long hair and wringing it out, caused a flood that swept away the evil forces.
