Description:

Central Africa, South Sudan, Toposa people, ca. early 20th century CE. A shield made of animal hide - probably sheep or goat or a young cow - with curved edges and a thick bent joint vertically along its center. Based on similar examples, a piece of wood was probably once affixed along this joint to strengthen the shield. A woven rattan decoration forms a boss on the front and protrudes through the concave back. Size: 15" W x 30.85" H (38.1 cm x 78.4 cm)
