Description:

**First Time At Auction**

South Africa, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wood club with a large knob at one end (also spelled knobkierrie or knobkerry), used for hurling at animals during the hunt, but also employed during enemy combat. Examples like this are carved from a branch that is thick enough to create the knob, the long handle is then whittled down. Size: 32" L (81.3 cm); knob measures 2.75" L x 3" W (7 cm x 7.6 cm)

Etymology of the name knobkierie derives from the Afrikaans word knop, which means knot or ball and the Nama word kierie which means walking stick or cane. The term has been adopted by indigenous peoples of the Pacific Islands and Australia. Knobkieries were used by protesters as well as opposing police officers during the Apartheid era.
